Vinyl Siding - Does Thickness Matter? The tests outlined in this brief report were performed to determine the advantages of the thickness of vinyl siding when used for wall covering.  Samples were taken at random from different manufacturers and represent a cross section of the sidings currently available on the market today. The ASTM specified tests performed were for oil can and impact resistance, the two most important attributes normally associated with vinyl thickness.
The results of these tests, which addressed the most frequent and critical of vinyl siding failures after proper installation, indicated that thickness of panels judged to be of like-manufactured quality indeed plays a role important enough to warrant the cost difference a purchaser pays for a few extra mils of vinyl thickness.
